The Past and the Present of the Pori Cotton Factory

The PoriCotton Factory was established in 1898 and operated until the end of the 1980’s.  Once the factory closed some textile industry continued in the building on a small scale until 1994. In 1994 an industrial restructuring took place and the rooms of the factory became vacant, but today the old mill is once again lively.  In the future more changes can be expected as the plan for a shopping center is realized.

On April 24, 2012 at 13.00 The Past and Present at the Pori Cotton Factory Project published a webpage that illustrates how the factory has changed in the last 75 years. In 1937 the factory’s facilities and the process of producing cotton fabric, which had been recently modernized, were documented in a photo album which was used as the factory presented its operation to international and domestic stakeholders.  The album is now preserved in the Finnish Industries EK Archive which also owns the rights to the images. The folder’s 52 photographs have been the starting point for this project. Additional photos document the change that has taken place in the factory over a 75 year period. The photos are now on a public webpage and show the difference between the past and present day spaces.

The webpage is available here:

The site consists of four parts. The Map page provides information on where the various plants and buildings were located within the factory as well as how these facilities are being used currently. The Photos page contains more pictures about the cotton-making process as well as the use of the premises today. The Office page presents the factory’s head office building. From the link page you can find links to the University’s webpage as well as the links to the project groups home departments.

This project was carried out in cooperation with the University of Turku’s European Heritage, Digital Media and Information Society Master's Program and Cultural Production and Landscape Studies Degree Program. The project team includes Anu Virtanen, Elissa Ernst, Georg Sedlbauer, Johanna Frondelius and Katherine Johnson and was directed by Anna Sivula, Professor of History.

EuroMACHS chosen to be featured in EU theme year brochure

EuroMACHS has been chosen to feature in the brochure "Creativity and Innovation -- best practice from EU programmes" that is produced for the conference of the same name that took place in Brussels from 2 to 3 March 2009. The brochure will also be used for other events that will be organised during the European Year of Creativity and Innovation.

From the 200 project invited to compete to feature in the brochure, EuroMACHS was chosen by a panel of 10 independent experts as an example of best practice in the field of creativity and innovation, helping to illustrate how DG Education and Culture supports this important subject which is at the heart of European Union policies.
