How to Apply

Requirements for admission:
A three years Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent degree at the university level in an applicable field, for example history or cultural studies. The degree should correspond to 180 ECTS. The degree has to be completed before 31 July, 2012. This means that an official and certified copy of the degree certificate of those applicants who will graduate after the application deadline must be received by the Faculty of Humanities by July 31, 2012. Language requirements:
- A very good knowledge of English. Additional knowledge of at least one language of the region is advantageous.
- All applicants are required to proof their knowledge of English in one of the following ways:
1) a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent university degree conducted in English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States, or
2) a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent university degree conducted in English in EU/EEA Countries including studies in English language, or
3) Studies (min. 20 ECTS) taken in a study programme conducted in English at the University of Turku, or
4) one of the following language tests. See below *
In the University of Turku the minimum scores to be approved are:
- TOEFL: 575 points from the paper-based test
90 points from the internet-based test
- IELTS: the minimum overall band score is 6.5 and no individual scores below 5.5.
- The Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): pass grades A, B or C
- The Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): pass grades A, B, or C
- The test for the National Certificate of Language Proficiency in English set by the Finnish National Board of Education: an average score of 5.
* It is the applicant's responsibility to make testing arrangements for her/himself. We recommend that prospective applicants sign up for a language test as soon as possible.
No other language tests or statements of the applicant's language skills will be accepted.
Language tests taken more than two years prior to application deadline will not be accepted.
When filling out the TOEFL Registration Form, please fill in University Admissions Finland's Institution Code 3138 in the Score Report Recipient field. Score slips or their copies provided by applicants are not accepted.
For other tests, please address the test results to University Admissions Finland. An applicant's copy of the score is also acceptable, as long as it is verifiable from the test organisers. Test scores sent as attachments to an e-mail message are not acceptable.
Application procedure:
The University of Turku uses the services of University Admissions Finland. It is a centralised service, which provides a template for the application form and offers technical help on how to fill it in. Help is only provided via e-mail and over the telephone.

- Please check carefully the instructions given, and don't forget to give all the required information and to send all the required enclosures:
- certification of language skills (all the language test results must be sent directly by the testing center to the University Admissions by the end of application deadline)
- official and certified copy of the applicant's diploma in original language
- official and certified copy of the translation in English of the diploma or the Diploma Supplement
- official and certified university transcript in original language and a translation in English
- if the degree is not competed until the end of application deadline, a statement of the university that the degree will be completed by the given date, and a transcript of studies
- temporary (provisional) degree certificate issued by an institution to a student who has successfully completed all studies included in the degree (the student has graduated)
- motivation letter (included in the application form, max 2 pages). The motivation letter plays an important role in the admission procedure. A letter of motivation is a short essay, where you introduce yourself and present your reasons for studying in the European Heritage, Digital Media and the Information Society Master’s Programme.
You are expected to give the following information:
* who you are and why you are interested in this programme
* what are the most important skills and knowledge you have acquired in your previous studies
* how is your educational background relevant and beneficial from the point of view of the programme
* what are your career plans and how are you going to utilize the programme in pursuing them.

NB. The documents submitted will not be returned. Please, don't send the original documents. The original documents of admitted students will be checked in the beginning of studies.
- Admission decisions are made by the Faculty of Humanities, Unversity of Turku. The selection of new students is based on prior studies, academic transcript (university records), and the statement of purpose (motivation letter). Relevancy of prior studies and student's motivation based in the statement of purpose are heavily weighted.
- All candidates will be notified by the programme of the admission decision on May 21, 2012. Successful applicants will receive a formal letter of acceptance, including detailed further instructions.
